Withdrawing Ajantha and bringing back the pacies is simply giving up the initiative. Unable to understand the logic. Go for the jugular when you have the advantage !!

I whole heartedly agree Omar.  If not Mendis, why not bowl Sanath or Dilshan and stick with spinners as our pace bowlers obviously have no chance on this wicket.
Mahela is letting Dhoni and Uthappa settle down for a big partnership.  Is Mehala playing for India or what?
As I write this Uthappa got out LBW for Murali, but they still have Pathan.  We cannot take any chances as Dhoni is Mr. Consistent and he has always stayed at the wicket and taken India to victory.

Please Mahela, Please stick to the spinners as we have enough of them in the playing 11.
After getting to this stage and, if we lose this match, Mahela has to pay for that, therefore must be taken out of the captaincy.

How good is Mendis...!!!!!

He came in when Sehwag was on fire and completey turned the game... Currently he's got 6 wickets for 9 runs, but there were 2 plum LBWs that were not given (including the hat-trick ball)... It has been an absolute treat to have watched this match...

Great work Sanath!
Great work Ajantha!

Congratulations to Sri Lanka!  This is a major victory for us, but we still have to learn from our mistakes and fix that middle order batting as our bowlers won't be able to rescue us in every match in this manner.

I am so happy that, when it mattered MOST, one old star (Sanath) and one new star (Ajantha) stepped in and SAVED us from defeat!

What a great final.  Well done Sri Lanka.  Sanatha and Mendis were the heroes. It was a surprise to me why after Dhoni was out Mahela didn’t continue with Mendis and allowed Mendis to increase his tally of wickets to 7.  After bowling 8 overs Mendis was taken out of the attack and Kulasekera was brought in for the 40 th over. Had he taken 7 wickets it would have been the second best ever bowling analysis after Vaas’s 8/29 against Zimbabwe.

I don’t blame Mahela for taking away Mendis after his magnificent first spell of 4/9 in 6 overs. With Dhony and Uthappa batting  in the middle anything could have happened. Mahela might have kept Murali and Mendis to counterattack any possible late assault of Dhony who was the most consistent Indian batsman.

My congradulation to Sri Lanka and their two heroes Sanath and Mendis for their great contributions.

As I said at the start India walked into a trap by not batting first, because they were confident of chasing over 300, as they did two days ago.

But I did not expect this Ajantha magic.
Quoting from Duleep Premachandran:
"Like a combine harvester scything through a field of corn, Mendis sliced through a line-up that has quite a reputation when it comes to playing spin. "

SP, mate we must give the "think tank" credit for hiding the trump card. This was a slaughter !! Biggest since Hannibal set a trap with his pinser movement against the Romans.
(sorry if I am on the over drive  Wink Wink)

niranjan,

agree with you totally. have to give credit to the management  for hiding the trump card. the way shewag was going i thought it would be over in 40 overs !! mahela brought ajantha at the correct moment . what a day it has been for me - to cap it all, nadal won wimbledon in an epic match. the spaniards are over the moon.

Well done to the team..I thinks its our 1st Asia Cup outside of home, Although Pakistan as a venue seems to be good for us.  Smiley

Susantha i agree with you...Mahela has a habit of doing this. Taking bowler's off for no reason when they are doing well.
Why bring on Kulasekera at the end. The spinners in tandem could have wrapped it up. The result wouldn't have changed.

The modern ODI is tailored made for batsmen, so you take any big wicket hauls like that when they come along.
What he constantly does is almost like declaring when a batsmen reaches 90.
If he was front-line bowler he's prob be p****d off if it happened to him.

Taking Ajantha off after 8 overs has attacted a lot of criticism here, but perhaps there is an angle that is being missed ?

When Ishant and Ojha were at the crease, the run chase was out of the question. I got the feeling that Ishant was using the opportunity to get a good look at Ajantha. He was infact pressuring Ojha on some of the runs to retain strike. (This would make sense from an Indian standpoint.. Ishant being a sure pick in the lineup for the coming tour)

If Ishant Sharma's batting at number 11 proves to be much for our attack in the tests then there's something seriously wrong with our team, and we prob would deserve to lose the game.

The big 3 Sachin, Sourav, and Dravid will return for the tests...The first two if on song a good players of spin, and Ganguly may have had a brief practice in the nets against Mendis during the IPL.

I think enough has been said about our emphatic & classic win over India in the final. There is very little for me to add other than to say how proud I am of the boys, specially the performance of the old boy and the new boy. Sensational, breath taking etc, etc..... What more to say about Sanath, I have run out of superlatives, but I must thank the old boy for not letting me down and getting the whole country buzzing and proud to be Sri Lankans when it really mattered. Down at 66/4 and only Dilshan left as a recoganised batsman how well Sanath took the pressure and went about it. Special mention should be also made of Dilshan who stood up when it really mattered. True, we won b'cos of a Mendis special but the win was setup by that special innings of Sanath.

We all knew the new boy was special and didnt he prove it to any doubters that were waiting to see how he would go against the so called strong Indian line up. I have been saying right along that some people have over hyped this Indian team.Wow!! it was something special that will be remembered for a long time.

We have to make special mention of the team management who took the bold decision of resting our trump card in the earlier match. Sometimes this kind of tactics may not be so popular but turn out well in the end. Everything went our way on the day, even Mahela's gamble of introducing Mendis in the 11th over really paid off.

Well done boys!!

Am i glad to be back .

First of all before I get attacked left , right and center, let me say that Sanath performed very well in the tournament and so did most of the batsman right through the tournament. The main reason for our batsman coming very good, should also not be forgotten and that partly and mainly is due to the batting paradises that were offered in terms of the wickets. I will not run away from reality and that is, we were superb in these conditions but have v little confidence yet to say that we can out up a good show if the pitches we played were australian or s african. We need to improve a lot to get there.

Ajantha exceeded his expectations specially in the finals coz I don't think we expected him to take as much as 6 wickets and turn the match around like the way he did. Indians were sailing and 273 was not that huge a score on those wickets, despite it being a final. The paces were not looking like they are going to break through and then comes this man to take the game to our side. As most of you are, I was also flabbergasted to see Ajantha not being given his full quota and a possible 8 wicket record hall. Someone the other day joked, it may have been because the team management would have thought ajantha getting a record this early in his career might ruin his head. In reality I couldnt come up with any logical reason for keeping him off from completing his magical spell that gave us the victory.
